10 Prompts for Interior Design from a Photo
Image-to-image interior design generation works differently from text-to-image. The model receives the existing geometry of a room and is expected to change only the finishes, furniture, and lighting. Most unsuccessful results occur for two reasons: the prompt lacks a strict instruction to preserve the layout, or the style is described using abstract adjectives without specifying materials and colors. Below is a prompt-building framework and 10 ready-to-use prompts for Midjourney (with –sref or an image prompt), Stable Diffusion/Flux with ControlNet, and multimodal models that support image editing.
Guide to Creating Interior Design Prompts
The order of the blocks matters: tokens at the beginning of a prompt receive greater weight, so structural constraints should come first, followed by technical camera parameters at the end.
- Geometry preservation block. Explicitly state that the walls, windows, doors, ceiling height, perspective, and camera angle must remain unchanged. Without this instruction, the model may redraw the layout. In Stable Diffusion, also use ControlNet (depth or MLSD) and set Denoising strength to 0.55–0.7. In Midjourney, the –iw 1.5–2 parameter can help.
- Room type and function. Living room, bedroom, kitchen-dining. The model selects an appropriate set of furniture only when it understands the purpose of the space.
- Style anchor. Use one style name plus one or two references to an era or design movement. Avoid mixing more than two styles, as this can make the result visually inconsistent.
- Materials and textures. This is the strongest lever for realism. Instead of writing “beautiful wood,” use “matte white oak plank flooring, wire-brushed.” Specific materials produce specific textures.
- Color palette. Define a base color, an accent color, and a 60/30/10 distribution. Specify shades using descriptive terms (warm greige, oxblood, sage) rather than simply writing “red” or “green.”
- Furniture and decor. List 4–7 items, specifying their shapes and materials. A long list can dilute the model’s attention, while a short one leaves too much room for hallucinations.
- Lighting. Specify the source, temperature, and direction: “soft north-facing daylight through existing window, 3000K warm accent lamps.” Lighting determines whether the image looks like a photograph or a 3D render.
- Camera and quality. Specify the lens, camera height, and photography style: “35mm lens, eye-level, architectural photography, ultra-detailed, photorealistic.” For interiors, a 24–35 mm lens provides a natural perspective.
- Negative prompt or restriction block. If a negative prompt field is available, use it. For models without one, add a sentence beginning with “Do not…” at the end. Common exclusions include distorted proportions, extra windows, text, watermarks, and people.
- Iterations. Fix the seed and change one block at a time: the color palette first, then the furniture, and finally the lighting. This makes it easier to identify which parameter affects the result.
Universal negative prompt for all the variations below:
distorted perspective, changed room layout, extra windows, missing doors, warped walls, floating furniture, blurry, low resolution, oversaturated, cartoon, 3D render look, text, watermark, people, clutter
All prompts begin with the same geometry preservation block. It is best not to shorten it.
